The pros say there are three vital components to the success of a bridal updo for short hair: products, accessories and creativity! You can always opt for hair extensions on your big day for more versatility but there are some glamorous and formal looks for short-haired brides, too.
Here are some tips from the pros:
Faux Updo Hairstyles
- If your hair is ultra short and you want the illusion of an updo, use your veil as a tool. Here's how: lift up the section of hair where you plan to place the veil and put it to the side; underneath that section of hair, make two or three tiny pony tails with small rubber bands; move the original section of hair back to cover up the rubber bands and then slide the comb through, making sure the teeth of the comb are secured through the ponytails.
- In Style Weddings suggests blowing your hair dry, working it toward the back of your head and then teasing hair all the way from the front to the crown of your head. You can then spray into place if your hair is ultra short, or if you have hair to spare, simply pull hair back and twist it up, securing with a few hair pins.

Adding Accessories to Your Updo
- Nothing formalizes or glams up a hairstyle like accessories. If your hair is too short to pull off even a faux updo, then accessories can help create that formal look you are yearning for. Add accessories such as headbands, ornate barrettes or hair pins and even feathers to lend a formal feel to any short hair updo. For a popular, romantic touch, pin an eye-catching flower behind the ear. We love this look featured on Brides.com

For accessories that go the extra mile for your short do, consider having accessories handmade and customized to match your unique wedding design/colors, or even your dress or jewelry. Remember those gorgeous hats and fascinators in the royal wedding? Local accessory designer Robin Dunivant has created one-of-a-kind fascinators and birdcage veils for her clients, made from a range of striking materials such as silk, feathers and Swarovski Crystal. One fascinator was created to match the bride’s wedding ring, another made in the shape of a dragonfly, which symbolizes good luck, prosperity and harmony in the Japanese culture. Ranging from delicate to dramatic, and often vintage-inspired, custom made accessories are unique, fanciful and dazzling.
